Green Index

This page tracks our household efforts to live green, socially conscious and naturally healthy, thus it’s a little broader in scope than a purely environmental assessment.

I know there’s plenty more we could do, and I’ll be adding to the center column on an ongoing basis. Feel free to make suggestions in the comments. I plan to update the goals and post a progress report on the blog at the turning of each season.

Currently Do
Could Do Will Do this Fall
Share one hybrid car between two drivers

Live in a small (too small!) apartment

Use public transportation or walk most of the time

Eat and buy vegan

Eat mostly organic and buy local produce when possible (CSA member)

Bring bags to the market

Recycle or reuse paper, glass, and plastic

Recycled crafting

Buy mostly used clothing

Practice reflexology and yoga

Take travel mugs when we get lattes

Buy recycled paper towels, facial tissue, and TP

Use recycled or previously used paper when printing

Clean green with vinegar and other eco-friendly products

Juice at least once a week. Steam more than fry.

Switch to more conscious nail polish

Fly less

Make or remake all my clothes for a set period. Minimal thrifting acceptable, but nothing new. I think this will be my major goal for the winter. My fashion budget has been bloating lately.

Minimize holiday consumption. Make most gifts or make donations in people’s names.

Make a charitable giving plan.

Switch to energy efficient lightbulbs.

Wow! Looks like you’re already pretty darn green… I took up, like, 8 planets or something crazy. Best of luck on your lifestyle changes in the coming seasons — feel free to share any tips/advice. Us eco-nerds have to stick together :)

Thanks for the luck, but I think you need it more than me! 365 changes in a year is a tall order. So far, so great, though. I’m cheering for you. :)

kisses…will be in tampa for four days. You know what would help you fly less…being near me. Oh, by the way, my company is a member of Co-op America!

You inspire me, Joriel. You really do. I’m trying to go vegetarian and that’s hard enough! I wish I could be as conscientious as you. Keep it up!

Aw, I appreciate that, but I’m no paragon. I’m actually not doing so great with my spring goals so far. I keep forgetting my travel mug, I haven’t juiced in two weeks, and I’ve barely cooked anything from scratch! Change isn’t easy.

I did get the vacuum cleaner and plant my container garden. We got the air purifier too, but stopped using it after a few days because sweetie kept waking up with a sore throat. Wish I knew what that was all about. Clean air’s supposed to be good for you, right?

Good luck with going veg!
