This project is not recycled or particularly kind to the environment, but I love it anyway. I bought a bunch of fake fur off the remnant table at the Pacific Fabric & Crafts Outlet (a little slice of heaven, BTW). I was going to wait until I had a backing attached and did the finishing, but I just couldn’t wait to show you how psychedelically fabulous it is. Yay for Lily and Shon’s serger!

This is going to be just the thing to snuggle up in when the evenings get chilly at festivals this summer. August is a huge month for us:
I’ve had to turn down some great work projects because I knew I couldn’t meet expectations with all these exciting plans next month. Better be worth it!

Well, summer solstice was more than a month ago, but I’m finally updating the Green Index for the new season.
Follow the jump below if you want to read about how we did on spring goals. I moved the ones that we’re really doing into the Currently Do column, and rearranged everything else accordingly. I also added a few new goals and removed one or two that just aren’t happening right now. In spite of my lax maintenance, I’m finding this project helpful in making me more accountable for living up to my convictions.

Sweetie proved his unbelievable awesomeness once again last night by binding me from neck to thigh in duct tape.
Now get your minds out of the gutter and check out my new dress form!

Stuffing it was the weirdest part. So surreal to be poking and prodding a three-dimensional green vinyl clone of myself. It’s filled with used plastic bags, styrofoam peanuts, bubble wrap, and other junk that I’ve collected. Very satisfying to put all that garbage to good use. And the total cost of the project was just $15 for a giant roll of duct tape. Could have been a couple bucks cheaper if I’d gotten the generic silver-grey duct tape, but I coveted the green.
Now I just need to conjure up a stand so I can use it for skirts and dresses. I’m already using it to finish recrafting an old ripped up long-sleeved shirt of sweetie’s into a tunic for me.

Lest ye think it’s all about me around here, I’ve also got projects going for sweetie and for a certain birthday boy. And I’m making the craziest quilt you’ve ever seen to keep us cozy at the various festivals we’re going to in August. It’s four different colors of fake fur on one side and random pieces of fleece on the other side.

For anyone who hasn’t already seen this on Electrolicious, Elly Fine took an awesome set of pictures at Tuesday’s Salon of Shame, including portraits of readers (sweetie & myself included) with their diaries. My “diary” in this case being a sheaf of scribblings, but I’ll find my little pink kittycat diary with the lock one of these days.

I finally finished this shirt for Ben that I blogged about long ago. He convinced me that it would work if the shirt was inside out and that the exposed seams would echo the roughness of the design. I think he was right.
I also uploaded some of my backlog of pics to flickr, including a handful of new crafty projects. More to come soon. And I haven’t forgotten about the green index! It’s just so hot and I have so much work to do. I find myself on the couch reading whenever I have a spare moment.
I’m on a run of excellent books. Susanna Clarke (of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell fame) has a fantastic new book of faerie stories, and I snagged an early paperback through QPB. I adore her wry sense of humor and devoured the book in a few days. I finally finished The Glass Castle. Memoirs that can take something as devastating as Jeanette Walls’ childhood and turn it into something beautiful are an inspiration to me. I think it probably takes a lot more courage to write a memoir than a novel, and she does a brilliant job of portraying the humanity of every person in her crazy family. Miranda July’s new book of stories is so crisp and tender and delicious that reading it made me question my entire identity as a writer. But that’s nothing new. The day I feel completely confident as a writer, the sky will probably fall in and I’ll lose all motivation. So back to work with me now! See you soon.
